Drinking warm milk before bed could help you sleep better

Milk is a naturally found rich source of calcium, vitamin D and potassium, and it is of great importance to the human body. Warm milk before bed could help you to relax and make you sleep well. Calcium and vitamin D which are found in milk helps to build strong, healthy bones and teeth, and the potassium allows maintenance of healthy blood pressure. The immediate benefit of warm milk before bed is that it allows you to sleep like a baby by keeping your body relaxed and calm. This is not to say that by drinking a cup of milk you are sure to fall asleep, as it is not a sleep serum, but the reality is that there are some substances in your warm milk that is associated with improved rest. Warm milk before bed is therefore prescribed for those who have had a hard day, as it can induce sleep and also provide healthy benefits.

To some people, just the image of a warm glass of milk comforting one to sleep at night can create drowsiness. The drowsiness caused by that warm glass of milk may be caused by some factors that might surprise some people. The benefit of a good night's sleep from a warm glass of milk may be a tossup between the psychological and the physiological.

Theories/Speculation

Tryptophan is an amino acid found in milk and turkey. Tryptophan in large doses does produce sleepiness, and many people attribute tryptophan to the drowsy feeling after the big Thanksgiving meal. However, according to Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, a sleep specialist at the Mayo Clinic, there is no food that can produce sleep in an individual. The amount of tryptophan found in a turkey dinner or a glass of milk does not contain enough of the chemical to induce drowsiness.

Psychological Aspects

That sleepiness associated with a warm glass of milk may be more psychological than most would suspect. Most people recall pleasant thoughts about their mothers. Milk is associated with mothers and a mother's love and care. Comforting feelings and remembrances can produce chemicals in the brain that actually form a sensation of well-being and relaxation. This brain chemical, serotonin, is associated with sleep. This feeling of well-being and relaxation may cause the sleepiness.

Reactions

A glass of warm milk warms the body. People sleep better when they are warm because the muscles relax more. When the body temperature is raised, the body also slows responses. The slowing of bodily responses precedes sleep. The warmth of the milk induces bodily changes that create this slowing of the body's responses and relaxation of muscles.

Effects

Warm milk coats and soothes the stomach. When drinking warm milk, a person may actually be a little peptic and milk may ease the feeling and create a sense of relief. Another factor is that most people sleep better when the stomach has something in it. Babies sleep after nursing when their stomachs are full. The same is true of children and adults. A stomach with some milk in it is comforting, which helps to induce sleep.

Considerations

For some people, particularly those with milk allergies or lactose intolerance, a glass of warm milk may be followed by digestive upsets. Other options that may be tolerated include soy, lactose-reduced, almond and rice milk.

How To Make Eye Makeup Small Appear Bigger

Eyes that are bigger usually appear to make you look younger and awake.

All eye shapes are beautiful, don’t get me wrong! I have small almond shaped eyes myself and I don’t want to toot my own horn, but quite a few people have complimented me for them! Not all of us have big eyes. However, we can always create an illusion by using clever make-up techniques.

If you follow the steps above, you’ll immediately see an improvement in your eye makeup and create the illusion of bigger, wider, more awake eyes. However, without the right contrast and shadowing, you won’t be able to make your small eyes appear bigger.

Here are my makeup tips for small eyes, that will make you look perfect for a casual, daytime look:

1. Apply lighter eye shadows

If you have small eyes, the most important makeup tip you must follow is to forgo dark shades and stick to lighter and brighter eye shadows. That being said, the standard makeup application of 1/3rd lighter shade in the inner corners and 2/3rds darker shades on the entire lid will not apply to you.

I recommend that you apply the lighter shade of your choosing on the entire lid. What works best for small eyes are shimmery, pearly light or neutral hues. Depending on your skin tone and undertone, as well as your eye color, you have a wide array of eye shadows that enhance your eye color and make your eyes the focus of attention.

2. All that shimmers is gold

Although neutral, matte eye shadows are great for small eyes, an even better option are eye shadows with a little shimmer. Frosty, pearly or metallic eye shadows will catch the light and make your small eyes appear bigger and brighter.

If you are not too keen on using shimmery eye shadows on the entire lid, place some on the inner corners of the eyes, on the center of the lid, just above the pupil and on the brow bone, just under the brow arch. This attracts light to your eyes and makes them stand out more.

3. Make your small eyes appear bigger

One of the best makeup products for small eyes is a neutral beige eye pencil that you can use to line the inner rims of your eyes and make them appear bigger and really stand out. While you can still use white pencil to do this, I find it looks more natural and thus more believable when you use a beige pencil.

Besides, no one has perfectly white eyeballs, so the beige pencil would counteract any broken capillaries and camouflage injected eyes caused by sleep deprivation or late night parties that you’ve attended.

I’m not against white eyeliner, I just find it more suitable for a glamorous party look or a 60s makeup inspired look, rather than a daytime use. The choice is up to you!

4. Apply darker shades at the outer corner

For a daytime look, the best way to make your eyes look bigger and brighter is to subtly shade the outer corner of the eye using a fine line. If you want to use a pencil eyeliner, avoid contouring the entire lash line and carefully use back and forth motions to push the color between the lashes. Draw a wing at the outer corners of the eyes and gently smudge it to make the look softer.  This will elongate the eyes and make them more beautiful and defined.

5, Mascara for small eyes

No eye makeup for small eyes is complete without mascara and naturally, there are some suggestions I have if you want your eyes to appear bigger. First off, use an eyelash curler before you finish your daytime look with mascara.

Once you’ve given your lashes a good curl, start at the base of your eyelashes and wiggle the mascara wand as you move up to the tips. The trick to avoiding clumpy eyelashes is to apply the second coat before the first coat dries. That way there are no clumps and no flakes.

For small eyes, I recommend concentrating your mascara on the middle and outer corners of your eyes, as to elongate them and make small eyes look bigger. You should use two layers – a lengthening mascara first and a voluminous mascara on top of that, to make your lashes really stand out.

6. Use false lashes

For a party look, don’t be shy to use false lashes, to make your eyes look bigger and doll-like. Different false lash strips can create different looks, so choose one that you find suits you best. I recommend you apply false lashes only on the outer corner of the eyes, to make your small eyes appear bigger.

A fruity treatment for your beauty

How about a massage with a fruit pulp or a fruit facial? Fruit facials have been there for at least a decade now. But with people getting more wary of effect of chemicals on the skin, a majority of them are now resorting to using something from their own kitchen. What better way to pamper your skin than with pure stuff which is free of toxins and not harmful to your skin?

Besides the fact that they hydrate and rejuvenate your skin, the very smell of a fruit on your face is quite de-stressing. Unlike the chemical beauty treatments, fruits are cost-effective, natural and also bring a visible difference.

Fruits are good for health. We all knew that. But they are great for your skin, your face, and in general for several beauty treatments; and not all of them involve eating the fruit. They’re natural, do not have harmful chemicals, and one doesn’t have to look very hard to find them. That is why fruit treatments are a very healthy and effective way to home groom ourselves.

Here is our pick of our top five favourite fruity beauty treatments. Read on.

1.Bananas

Aside from making a breakfast healthy, bananas make our skin and hair supple too. Mash up a banana, apply it all over your face, and leave it for about 20 minutes. For using as a conditioner for the hair, mix some mashed banana with a little honey and apply evenly to hair after you shampoo. Rinse well, and what you’re left with is glowing shiny hair.

2. Lemon

Lemon juice is an important ingredient in most Indian recipes. This is also a fruit of all seasons and almost always finds place on your kitchen shelf or refrigerator. With its vitamin C content, its juice will keep your skin beautiful. A glass of warm water with a tsp of honey and a dash of lemon juice on an empty stomach every morning is a great skin cleanser. With its astringent properties, it can be used to lighten the skin tone and also diminish acne scars. Rub the inside of a lemon peel on your elbow remove dark spots. Mix lemon and honey and use it as a natural bleach on your skin.Apple: An apple a day keeps the doctor away is cliched, but its health benefits are undisputable. Apple's antioxidant property prevents cell and tissue damage. Studies by nutritionists have shown that apples contain abundant amounts of elastin and collagen that help keep the skin young. Applying a mixture of mashed apple, honey, rose water and oatmeal can act as a great exfoliating mask on your skin.

3. Avocado

These are excellent for reducing puffiness around the eye. Apply a peeled slice of avocado under each eye for 20 minutes to reduce redness, irritation and puffiness. For people with oily skin, a face mask made by mixing half an avocado (mashed), the white of one egg, and one teaspoon of lemon juice will do wonders. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse.

4. Papaya

The benefits of this fruit on skin have perhaps been talked about since the time of our ancestors. Papaya is rich in antioxidants and contain a special enzyme called papain that can kill dead cells and cure skin impurities. A glass of papaya milk or just applying the flesh of papaya on your skin can do wonders to your skin.

5. Mango

Rightly called the king of fruits for not just its taste but also for health benefits. The soft pulpy fruit has an amazing effect on skin too. Rich in vitamin-A and rich antioxidants, it fights against skin aging, regenerates skin cells and restores the elasticity of skin.

WHAT BENEFITS OKRA FOR DIABETES ?

Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Diabetes contributes to the development of deadly conditions like cardiovascular disease and end-stage renal disease. Consuming a healthy diet can help those who have type 1 and 2 diabetes control their blood sugar, and help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. There are a number of diabetes-related benefits of adding okra to your healthy eating plan.

Incidences of diabetes diagnoses are only increasing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The verdict is out on whether okra can be used successfully as a direct diabetes treatment. However, the okra plant does have many proven health benefits. Read on to see if okra could be a viable part of your diabetes treatment plan.

Okra has long been favored as a food for the health-conscious. It contains potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. It’s low in calories and has a high dietary fiber content. Recently, a new benefit of including okra in your diet is being considered. Okra has been suggested to help manage blood sugar in cases of type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.
Benefits of Okra for People With Diabetes these is :

1. Glycemic Index

The glycemix index (GI) is a measurement of how quickly carbohydrates in foods turns to sugar in your blood. Regularly consuming low GI foods like okra can help even out roller coaster blood sugar levels and aid in weight control. Okra has a GI below 20, which is considered a "low GI" food.

2. Kidney Disease

Almost half of all cases of kidney disease are the result of diabetes. Keeping your blood sugar within a healthy range, treating high blood pressure and maintaining a normal body weight can reduce your risk of kidney disease. Additionally, regularly consuming okra can keep kidney disease at bay, according to study results published in the October 2005 "Jilin Medical Journal." In this study of diabetics, those who ate okra daily reduced clinical signs of kidney damage more than those that simply ate a diabetic diet.

3. Soluble Fiber

Nearly 50 percent of the fiber found in okra is in the form of soluble fiber. This type of fiber slows digestion, delaying and reducing the impact of carbohydrate-rich foods on blood sugar levels. Eating at least 25 g of fiber per day can help reduce high blood sugar levels. Soluble fiber may also keep your appetite under control, making weight loss easier.

4.Heart Disease

People with diabetes have a higher risk for heart disease than those that don't. Diabetics who regularly consume vegetables in general, including okra, reduce their heart disease risk, according to study results found in the April 2008 "Journal of Nutrition." In this study, type 2 diabetics who ate vegetables had a 10 percent lower heart disease risk when compared to those who seldom ate vegetables.

Healthy Benefits of Drinking Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera is a plant that has been used historically in various traditional cultures for its health benefits, as well as its medicinal and skin care properties. However, the benefits of taking aloe vera internally have not been completely validated. Aloe leaves are made up of three layers, the innermost being a gel containing the plant's alleged beneficial properties. Today, the gel inside the aloe vera plant is used in skin care products, and it's also consumed in its raw natural form for its purported health benefits.

Aloe vera juice is a gooey, thick liquid made from the flesh of the aloe vera plant leaf. It’s commonly known to treat sunburns. But drinking this healthy elixir in juice form provides you with a number of other health benefits.

Aloe vera juice is made by crushing or grinding the entire leaf of the aloe vera plant, followed by various steps to purify and filter the liquid. With a mild, tolerable flavor, the juice mixes easily into smoothies and shakes. This makes aloe vera juice a practical whole food supplement.
Here are nine reasons to drink pure, uncolored, low anthraquinone aloe vera juice.

1. Alkalinity
A body with an acidic pH is a breeding ground for disease. It’s an atmosphere where illness thrives. Help keep your body balanced by eating and drinking alkaline foods and beverages such as aloe vera juice.

Other smart alkaline food choices include:

- leafy greens
- root vegetables
- citrus
- nuts and seeds
- apple cider vinegar
- coconut vinegar

2. Hydration
The aloe plant is very water-dense, so it’s an ideal way to prevent or treat dehydration. Staying hydrated helps your body detox by providing a way for you to purge and flush out impurities. The juice also packs a hefty punch of nutrients that optimize your body’s organ output.

This is crucial, because your kidneys and liver are largely responsible for the task of detoxifying your blood and producing urine. For this reason, you need to keep them healthy.

Recovery from heavy exercise also requires rehydration through the intake of extra fluids. Your body requires more fluids in order to flush and rid itself of the lactic acid buildup from exercising. Try aloe vera juice instead of coconut water after your next hard workout.

3. Liver function
When it comes to detoxing, healthy liver function is key. Aloe vera juice is an excellent way to keep your liver healthy. That’s because the liver functions best when the body is adequately nourished and hydrated. Aloe vera juice is ideal for the liver because it’s hydrating and rich in phytonutrients.

4. For constipation
Drinking aloe vera juice helps increase the water content in your intestines. Research has shown the relationship between increasing the intestinal water content and the stimulation of peristalsis, which helps you pass stool normally.

If you’re constipated or have problems with frequent constipation, try incorporating aloe vera juice into your daily routine. Aloe also helps normalize the healthy bacteria in your gut, keeping your healthy intestinal flora balanced.

5. For clear skin
Hydrating aloe vera juice may help reduce the frequency and appearance of acne. It may also help reduce skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis.

Aloe vera is a rich source of antioxidants and vitamins that may help protect your skin. The important compounds in aloe vera have also been shown to neutralize the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, repair your skin from existing UV damage, and help prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

6. Nutritious boost
Aloe vera juice is jam-packed with nutrients. Drinking it is an excellent way to make sure you don’t become deficient. It contains important vitamins and minerals like vitamins B, C, E, and folic acid.

It also contains small amounts of:

- calcium
- copper
- chromium
- sodium
- selenium
- magnesium
- potassium
- manganese
- zinc

Aloe vera is one of the only plant sources of vitamin B-12, too. This is excellent news for vegetarians and vegans.

Keeping your food and drink intake nutrient-rich is key in combating most preventable diseases.

7. Heartburn relief
Drinking aloe vera juice may give you relief when heartburn attacks. The compounds present in aloe vera juice help control secretion of acid in your stomach. The effects have even been shown to combat gastric ulcers and keep them from getting larger.

8. Digestive benefits
Aloe vera contains several enzymes known to help in the breakdown of sugars and fats and to keep your digestion running smoothly. If your digestive system isn’t operating optimally, you won’t absorb all of the nutrients from the food you’re eating. You’ve got to keep your internal engine healthy in order to reap the benefits from your diet.

Mini Rose Apple Pie Recipe

If you have been on Pinterest for any amount of time, you may have come across the trendy apple rose design seen on cupcakes, pies, tarts, and more. It’s not hard to see the appeal of it, but I wanted to know: Is it really all that easy to do?

This dessert is a real crowd-pleaser with a delicious bouquet of gorgeous red apple roses, rich creamy custard and crisp pecan pastry. It’s beautiful enough to take centre place on a Christmas dessert buffet … but why wait when you could share it over afternoon tea with old friends. We’ve just returned from a short trip to Melbourne, where we spent several days eating delicious food, swimming in the backyard pool and swapping stories with some of our closest friends. The afternoons drifted by so easily. Nobody dressed to impress, the kids forgot about their iPads and the conversation (and laughs) just flowed. I guess it’s true what they say – the simple things in life are often the best.

Mini Apple Rose Pie

- 1 Perfectly Flaky Pie Crust
- 6 Honeycrisp apples, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoon lemon juice (about half a lemon)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoon butter
- 5 tablespoons seedless raspberry jam
- 1 to 2 small drops red food coloring (optional)

How To Make :

1. Chill mini muffin tin while preparing dough.
2. Prepare the pie dough as instructed.
3. Once ready, roll out on a lightly floured surface; using a 3-inch cookie cutter, punch out rounds.
4. Remove muffin tin from refrigerator. Gently press rounds into each well.
5. Transfer pie crust-lined muffin tin back to refrigerator to prepare filling.

Core apples. Using a mandoline or a very sharp knife, cut apples into half-moon shapes 1/16-inch thin. Gently toss apples in lemon juice. Place brown sugar, butter, and jam into a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir and cook until ingredients are melted and combined. Remove from heat and add food coloring if using. Pour mixture over apples slices. Toss to combine. Set aside for 5 to 10 minutes to allow apples to become pliable. If apples are still not pliable, quickly microwave in 15-second bursts until apples are pliable. Strain apples slices and discard liquid.

To form roses, arrange about 8 apple slices in a straight row, with each slice overlapping one another to create a 12-inch line. Starting with one end, gently roll apples. Transfer rolled apples into pie crust. Repeat rolling apples, until all pie crusts are filled. Heat oven to 350°F. Transfer to oven and bake until the crust is golden and apples have cooked, about 30 minutes. If apples start to brown faster than pie crust, lightly place foil on top.

There are always so many breakfast choices. I chose to go with almonds and cocoa smoothie. This is a perfect recipe because to begin with, it’s really tasty.

Secondly, cocoa is known for its cholesterol reducing properties, ideal as you try losing weight. If you have diabetes type 2, cocoa reduces your resistance to insulin which keeps your blood sugar in check.

I love almonds. You can extract almond milk, which is my preferred method or buy the ready made unsweetened almond milk.

Green tea powder combines with the other ingredients to create a superfood.

Ingredients :

- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon green tea
- A handful of frozen raspberries

Instructions :
Blend all ingredients until smooth and enjoy this yummy chocolate drink.

#2 Lunch diabetic smoothie recipe
What I love most about this recipe is its simplicity.

It’s beyond delicious and there is no need for a sweetener. It was a big hit for my family.

The apple and carrot flavors hide the spinach taste really well. The thick creamy texture makes it ideal for lunch. It will help you avoid looking for snacks to fill up on before dinner.

- ½ apple, cored and pitted
- 1 medium carrot
- 1 cup spinach

#3 Dinner diabetic smoothie

I thought long and hard about this one. I needed a recipe that will ease your day’s fatigue and which is easy to digest.

Many a times my dad has woken up with soaring glucose levels just because he ate too much and it was not digested well in the stomach.

This is a non-dairy, light and refreshing smoothie you can enjoy after your dinner as dessert, or even as a substitute for dinner.

5 Cancer- Fighting Juice & Smoothie Recipes-Powerfull Juice

I get asked this question all of the time: “Do you have any cancer-fighting juice recipes?”

I often recommend making juices and smoothies. Not only is making a juice or a smoothie simpler than cooking a meal from scratch but it also provides you with a nutrient dense glass of deliciousness. I like to think of it as a direct deposit into each and everyone of our cells. If you are dealing with cancer or are implementing a cancer-free lifestyle balancing your meals is top priority. Here are my favorites that are full of anti-oxidants and cancer fighting properties.

My 5 Favorite Anti-Cancer Juice Recipes:

#1 Cucumber- Carrot- Kale juice (1 cucumber, 8 carrots, 4 leaves kale)

I love this juice because it’s so simple. After washing all of the produce and cutting off the tops of the carrots, I simply throw it in the juicer and it’s done! Cucumber adds the majority of the liquid and both carrots and kale have mega anti-cancer properties. If you want a sweeter juice, you can add a half of an apple or to mask some of the flavor, squeeze 1/2 of a lemon into the juice by hand.

#2 Cucumber- Ginger- Beet juice (1 cucumber, 1 medium size beet, 1/4″ piece ginger)

The beet will add a tad of sweetness to this juice. Beets have beautiful cleansing properties, as they help detoxify the liver. Ginger has strong anti-cancer properties, and the cucumber adds volume and is extremely alkaline.

#3 Carrot- Cabbage- Pineapple (6-10 carrots, 1/4 purple cabbage, pineapple core.)

Carrot dominates this juice, but the slight tropical flavor from the pineapple core (which has anti-cancer and enzymatic properties for digestion) makes it one of my favorites. I use the rest of the pineapple for my kids’ lunches. Cabbage, being in the cruciferous vegetable family has excellent cancer-fighting properties. If you’re feeling a little reserved about adding cabbage, make this juice without it the first time and then add a little bit at a time for subsequent juices.

#4 Apple- Carrot- Broccoli- Beet (1 green apple, 4-6 carrots, 1 broccoli stalk, 1 medium beet)

This juice is slightly sweeter. Green apple has less sugar than red apples but still helps mask the broccoli flavor. Beets once again are incredibly anti-cancer and cleansing. And of course the broccoli with the cancer-fighting quercetin and sulforaphane is worth the unique flavor. Squeezing the juice of 1/2 of a lemon (by hand) is a nice touch to help mask the broccoli flavor.

#5 Apple- Celery- Carrot- Baby Bok Choy (1 green apple, 6-8 carrots, 1 bunch baby bok choy)

Another slightly sweeter juice due to the green apple, the celery adds additional antioxidant phytonutrients, along with already awesome carrots and cancer-fighting and cruciferous bok choy.

Durian is a rich source of potassium, and since potassium is such an integral part of the salt and fluid balance throughout the cells of the body, potassium levels also dictate blood pressure. When plenty of potassium is present, the blood vessels can relax, reduce the stress on the cardiovascular system, and reduce the chances of developing conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. Reduced stress on the veins and arteries also increases oxygenated blood flow to the brain, and studies have shown that potassium levels can, therefore, help boost cognitive function and memory, reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

2. Anti-aging

In traditional, herbal medicine, durian was often hailed as a tool to battle aging, and was one of the main reasons why people called it the “king of fruits”. It turns out that durian has a wide variety of antioxidant properties stemming from its vitamin and organic chemical makeup that actively reduce the number of free radicals in the body. Eating an excessive amount of durian can seriously boost your body’s ability to eliminate those free radicals, thereby reducing the chances of premature aging and delaying the appearance of symptoms such as wrinkles, age spots, macular degeneration, hair loss, tooth loosening, arthritis, cancer, and heart diseases. Eat enough durian, and you can feel, look, and act younger than you have in years!

3. Cures Insomnia

Durian contains tryptophan, the organic chemical closely associated with falling asleep after Thanksgiving since it is found in massive doses in turkey. By adding tryptophan to your diet, it enters your brain, is converted to serotonin, which induces a feeling of relaxation and happiness. The excess serotonin then releases melatonin into the bloodstream, which causes the body to feel tired, and eventually pass out. If you suffer from insomnia, have a few pieces of durian before you try to fall asleep and see the results for yourself!

4. Treats Sexual Dysfunction

A number of studies have recently been conducted to evaluate the potential of durian meat to act as an aphrodisiac. The results are in, and it can produce intensified sexual libido and stamina, and also reduce the chances of infertility in men and women, and increase sperm motility. All in all, it is an aphrodisiac in every sense of the word!.

5. Prevents Cancer

As mentioned earlier, durian has a wealth of vitamins, nutrients, and organic chemicals that function as antioxidants. In the battle against cancer, free radicals are vitally important, because, during cell metabolism, there are byproducts created, called free radicals. These free radicals can destroy the DNA of regular cells and convert them to cancer cells, which can then metastasize or form fatal, tumorous growths. All of the antioxidants which reduce oxidative stress on the organs of the body are bonuses to the immune system, and durian is packed with them, including vitamin C, vitamin B complex, and vitamin E, as well as phytonutrients that battle cancerous cells.

6. mproves Bone Health

Durian is a great source of magnesium, potassium, manganese, and copper, all of which play an integral role in developing and sustaining bone strength and durability. Potassium also increases the efficiency of nutrient uptake by the cells, so it maximizes many beneficial minerals the body takes in, also improving bone health. These essential minerals help to prevent the development of osteoporosis for patients of any age.

7 Treats Anemia

Durian contains different minerals, but there are high levels of folic acid within durian as well, which is an essential component in the production of red blood cells. Also, durian is a good source of iron and copper, two other essential components of red blood cells; once RBC production is back to normal, symptoms of anemia will disappear, which include indigestion, migraines, fatigue, anxiety, and cognitive malfunction.

BENEFIT & NUTRITION OF DURIAN

Durian fruits are melon-shaped and covered in a spiked olive-green skin. Inside the fruit there are several areas of velvety, yellow flesh that cover seeds. Nevertheless, the fruit is most easily recognized by its smell.

Although fruits tend to be low in calories and beneficial for weight loss, not all fruits have the same nutritional values. For example, durian fruit, known in some areas as the king of fruits, is high in fat and calorie-dense, so it can be a poor choice for weight loss. Whether you include the durian fruit in your diet or not, you will need to consume a deficit of calories to lose weight.

Durian health benefits are mostly due to its huge amount of phytonutrients, protein and antioxidants. It is naturally rich in potassium, fiber, iron, vitamin C and vitamin B complex. The king of fruits is exceptional for improving muscle strength, reducing blood pressure, and improving bowel movements and skin health. It also supports the nervous and immune systems and improves the formation of red blood cells. Listed below are some of the popular health benefits of Durian fruit:

1. Digestive aid

Like many “meaty” fruits, Durian contains high levels of dietary fiber, which are actually essential for the normal function of multiple systems in the body, most particularly the digestive system.

Fiber stimulates peristaltic motion and the secretion of digestive and gastric juices, further easing the entire process. By reducing conditions like constipation and blockage in the intestines, conditions like bloating, excess flatulence, heartburn, cramps, and indigestion can be reduced, as well as serious conditions like colorectal cancer. Much of the fiber in durian is insoluble fiber, which also lowers the frequency of diarrhea for people with loose stool.

2. Sexual dysfunction

Several researches have recently been conducted to evaluate the potential of durian meat to act as an aphrodisiac. The result shows the probability to produce intensified sexual libido and stamina, and also decrease the chances of infertility in men and women, and increase sperm motility. All in all, it is an aphrodisiac in every sense of the word!

3. Bone health

Durian is one of the wonderful sources of copper, magnesium, manganese and potassium, all of which play an important role in developing and sustaining bone strength and durability. Apart from that potassium also increases the effectiveness of nutrient uptake by the cells, so it maximizes how many beneficial minerals the body takes in, also benefiting bone health. These essential minerals help to prevent the development of osteoporosis for patients of any age!(3)

4. Promotes healthy teeth and gums

A single serving of durian consists of 95 mg of phosphorus which is actually 13.57% of the daily recommended value. Even though calcium is amongst the best-known nutrition for healthy gums and teeth, calcium are not able to build teeth without phosphorus. So include durian in your regular diet as it is loaded with phosphorus, calcium as well as other essential minerals which are essential for the normal functioning of the body.

5. Blood pressure and cardiovascular health

As we have mentioned earlier, durian is a rich source of potassium, and since potassium is such an integral part of the salt and fluid balance throughout the cells of the body, potassium levels also dictate blood pressure. When plenty of potassium is present, the blood vessels can relax, decreasing the stress on the cardiovascular system, and reducing the chances of developing conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. Reduced stress on the veins and arteries also increases oxygenated blood flow to the brain, and researches have shown that potassium levels can therefore help boost cognitive function and memory, decreasing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia!

2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites and salt with an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form. Slowly add the remaining 6 tablespoons sugar and beat until stiff, glossy peaks form.

3. Gently fold the egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture. Combine the flour and cornstarch in a small bowl, then add to the egg mixture in 3 additions.

4. Divide the mixture into 6 bowls and dye each bowl of batter a different color. Be sure to gently fold the food coloring in - you want to keep the batter as airy as possible.

5. Pour the batter into 6 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 5 minutes, until the cakes are fully cooked. Transfer the cakes to a wire rack and allow them to fully cool.

6. Make the buttercream: Place the butter in a bowl and whip with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and mix to combine. Add the confectioner's sugar one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then whip for 3 to 5 minutes, until fluffy. Set a third of the buttercream aside. Divide the remaining buttercream into 6 bowls and dye them the colors of the rainbow. Place each color in a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped piping tip.

7. Using a plate as a stencil, cut the edges off each layer of cake. This will give the cake a clean look and make layering much easier.

8. Place the purple layer of cake on a serving platter of your choice and spread some of the white buttercream evenly onto the surface. Place the blue layer of cake on top
and top with some more buttercream. Continue in the order of the rainbow until you reach the pink layer. Spread a thin layer of the remaining white buttercream over the entire surface of the cake.

9. Pipe rainbow stripes of buttercream onto the cake, starting with the base of the cake with the purple buttercream. Once you reach the pink buttercream, work backward in the order of the rainbow to create a pretty, rainbow ombre effect. Repeat until the cake is fully covered in buttercream and enjoy!

Try This Filling Vegetarian Meal Plan For Weight Loss

People assumed the differences between a vegan lifestyle and an omnivorous one were so big that debate-worthy fights would break out. But now science is stepping in as the moderator. While a recent study cited veganism as the most effective weight loss diet, research also shows it’s possible — and beneficial — to have a moderate stance and diet.

If you're looking to go vegetarian (even if it's just part-time), make sure to get protein at every meal, says Mendez. "It’s really important to help your body to repair and to maintain lean muscle mass." And be careful not to take in too many carbs. “The main pitfall with vegetarian diets is you overdo it on the carbs and eat a ton of starchy foods like bread, pizza, and pasta,” says Mendez. If your dinner is just pasta with tomato sauce, you’re missing the balance (i.e., fats and proteins) you need to stay full—and you end up overeating and/or snacking soon after you’re done eating.

Try this sample meal plan if you think a vegetarian diet could be right for you and your weight-loss goals:

1.BREAKFAST

Mix one serving of carbs, like fruit, whole-grain toast, or whole-grain cereal, with a serving of lean protein, like eggs, low-fat dairy, or a tofu scramble. “The carbs give you energy, while the protein helps you to feel full and meet your needs for day,” says Mendez. Here are some specific breakfast ideas:

- 3/4 cup whole-grain cereal and 1 cup unsweetened soy or almond milk (soy has more protein!)
- 1 cup cooked oatmeal, 1 cup berries, and 1 tablespoon nuts or seeds
- Smoothie with 1 cup of fruit plus 1 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt OR one serving of pea, soy, or hemp protein powder

2. LUNCH

Divide and conquer: Half of your plate should be a rainbow of non-starchy veggies (like spinach, green beans, cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms, peppers, or eggplant), a quarter should be protein (which is about 1 cup of beans, legumes, tofu, fish, or eggs), and a quarter should be carbs (about 1/2 cup starchy veggies like corn, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, or squash; or 1/2 cup grains like quinoa, brown rice, or amaranth). A few options that fit the bill:

- Large green Greek-style salad with 1 cup garbanzo beans, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, 2 tablespoons crumbled feta, 1/4 chopped avocado topped with 2 tablespoons balsamic-olive oil vinaigrette
- 3 ounces grilled smoked tofu or tempeh on a whole-wheat bun topped with sliced zucchini and carrot, lettuce, and 1 tablespoon vegan pesto (made with walnuts, olive oil and kale)
- About 3/4 cups cooked quinoa with lentils, 1/3 avocado, a handful of fresh spinach, 2 tablespoons chopped pecans, 1/8 cup halved grapes, 2 tablespoons diced red onion, and one small segmented clementine

3. SNACK

“Definitely be mindful of snacking," says Mendez. "If you’re really hungry an hour after a main meal, it could be that your meal wasn’t filling enough to meet your needs." Have one to two snacks at the midpoint of the longest stretch between breakfast to lunch or lunch to dinner, and watch your portion size. She suggests pairing a carb and protein, which complement each other and help you to feel satisfied. Some ideas:

- One hard boiled egg and an orange
- 1 1/2 ounces low-fat cheese and 2 tablespoons dried fruit
- 1/2 tablespoon nut butter spread on an apple
- Carrots dipped in 1/4 cup hummus

4. DINNER

Stick to the same rule you used at lunch: Your plate should be one half veggies, one quarter carbs and one quarter protein. Lots of choices here:

- 1 1/2 cups vegetarian lentil chili (use the kitchen sink of veggies—think butternut squash, red pepper, crushed tomatoes, black or kidney beans, onions, garlic) and one slice of whole-wheat bread or 1/2 cup cooked ancient grains (like quinoa, amaranth, bulgur, or barley)
- 1 cup cooked brown rice topped with 2 cups of tofu-veggie stir-fry (use pan-friendly veggies like chopped cauliflower, broccoli, red pepper, and snow peas; add freshly grated ginger, lemon, chopped onion, and garlic for flavor)
- 1 cup tempeh and black bean taco salad, served on 1 cup of leafy greens, and one whole-wheat tortilla topped with a dollop of salsa and a 2 tablespoons of low-fat Greek yogurt
